The TS-BAT3 board is a PC/104 daughter card (standard format) which provides 5V of regulated DC voltage to the PC/104 bus, acting as a back-up power supply. Although designed to operate with the TS-7XXX series of products, it should work with any PC/104 main board, provided that the appropriate software is installed. It is powered by three NiMH cells with a rated capacity of 2000mAh.
The TS-BAT3 acts as an embedded UPS (uninterruptible power supply). In the event of an external power interruption, the TS-BAT3 will allow for an elegant software shutdown, seamlessly switching to battery power with no interruptions in 5V power, preventing the filesystem corruption that often results from unexpected power loss. A flash sector that loses power in the middle of a write op is lost forever. The TS-BAT3 keeps flash chips from developing bad blocks by providing back up power so that flash write operations always have time to complete.
The TS-BAT3 is also ideally suited for applications far from an external power source. The TS-BAT3, using sleep modes combined with the TS-7260, can run an embedded system for days in the field. This combination is excellent for solar-powered solutions. The TS-BAT3 includes a virtual battery fuel gauge (accessible via software, with no physical indicator) which allows application software to make intelligent decisions based on remaining power.
The TS-BAT3 provides a serial COM port interface for communication. A TS-UART serial port (similar to the standard 16C550) appears as a selectable PC-compatible COM port for software compatibility and embeddedTS provides appropriate serial port driver binary and source. The TS-Linux distribution already includes Linux drivers for the TS-UART core by default. Packets are transmitted using a modified HDLC protocol. An application is available for configuring and reading the status of the TS-BAT3.
